US tells armed group in DRC to surrender or face ‘military option’

Barack Obama's special envoy to central Africa issues warning to FDLR, a group formed by leaders of the Rwanda genocide

fdlr_fighter.jpgBarack Obama's special envoy to central Africa has warned an armed group in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that it has months to surrender or face "the military option".

Speaking at the US president's summit with African leaders in Washington, Russell Feingold said there was a "tremendous need to finish off" the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a group formed by the leaders of the genocide in Rwanda 20 years ago and which controls parts of eastern DRC.

"We have to get rid of the FDLR, not so much because of their military capacity, but because of what they represent and the destabilising effect that they have with regard to relations with Rwanda.

Outcome of the 2 nd and Last Presidency of Rwanda in the United Nations Security Council (July 2014)

On 31 July 2014, Rwanda, which is a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the period January 1st 2013 through December 31st 2014, has completed its second and last presidency of that organ. During that period, our country presided over the Council twice, in April 2013 and in July 2014, as the presidency is rotating, by alphabetical order and on a monthly basis, between members of the Security Council.

2. For both presidencies, Rwanda decided to convene “Wrap-Up Sessions”, which provide an opportunity for the Council to assess its work, through country-specific situations and thematic issues considered during the month, and critically examine its progress on those issues, its processes, and how it can increase its efficiency and effectiveness.
