Outcome of the 2 nd and Last Presidency of Rwanda in the United Nations Security Council (July 2014)
Tuesday 5 August 2014

olivier_nduhungirehe.jpg1. On 31 July 2014, Rwanda, which is a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the period January 1st 2013 through December 31st 2014, has completed its second and last presidency of that organ. During that period, our country presided over the Council twice, in April 2013 and in July 2014, as the presidency is rotating, by alphabetical order and on a monthly basis, between members of the Security Council.

2. For both presidencies, Rwanda decided to convene “Wrap-Up Sessions”, which provide an opportunity for the Council to assess its work, through country-specific situations and thematic issues considered during the month, and critically examine its progress on those issues, its processes, and how it can increase its efficiency and effectiveness.

Refugee agency needs funding now

Starting this month, ORR plans to reprogram $94 million away from refugee services to meet the needs of the newly arriving children.

As Mountain Gorillas Bounce Back, Rwanda Names Gorilla Newborns

Rwanda holds naming ceremony for baby gorillas born over the past year.

Published July 2, 2014

dr_kinani.jpgJean-Felix Kinani was far from center stage Tuesday when Rwanda held its tenth annual Kwita Izina, the national naming ceremony for baby mountain gorillas born during the past 12 months. Yet the 18 baby gorillas named at the event owe much to his team of veterinarians.

Kinani, 42, is the head Rwanda veterinarian with Gorilla Doctors, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the health of the world's 880 remaining mountain gorillas—the iconic animals found in Rwanda, Uganda, and the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the only great apes on Earth whose numbers are increasing.
